How young people use their phones and access the internet is one of the biggest dilemmas that parents face in the second quarter of the 21st century.  Youngsters need their freedom as they grow, but it’s vital that they are taught to use it appropriately and responsibly.

Research shows that using mobile phones and screen time can have a negative effect on sleep patterns.  But most parents don’t need any research to tell them that – they see if for themselves.

Below are some tips on introducing good habits early.

  1. Show that misuse has consequences – If a child misuses their technology, it’s entirely appropriate to further restrict their usage or confiscate their phone.  But make it clear to the young person that they can earn such privileges back and explain how they can do so
  1. Check what is being viewed – as a parent be proactive in looking at search history and messages.  Do this jointly with your child – there should be no secrets

  •  Tablet time – make sure that usage times for mobile phones and screens are consistent and shared with children
  1. Sleep time – again, consistency is key.  Ensure that times for bedtime are shared and follow a routine boundary.  Regular and good sleep patterns are crucial for young people.
